Cello Music

The night I walked by the water and heard cello I had not intended to photograph a reflection at all but I couldn’t resist the sound so I gave in and aimed my camera at what had elicited it. As soon as I let go of my thoughts, the texture of the water washed over me in synch with the sound and turned to satin on my skin. When I felt myself climb into the shadows between the folds, I snapped the shutter. I hear cello every time I look at it today, though I discovered that if I turn it upside down, it becomes violin.

Yellow Boat Minor Chord

I took this image when I heard a yellow chord in a minor key. To my surprise, it appeared a few years later in one of my dreams. I was watching a sunset with friends when I noticed, mixed in with the regular sailboats on the other side of the pond, this reflection. There it was, a two-dimensional rendering, afloat, pretending to be the real thing. No one noticed but me and when I next looked at its shimmering it winked back at me.

Homage To Monet

"Homage to Monet" is a good example of how color elicits sound for me. I took this image when I heard a chord of color; in addition, I heard a crescendo which is produced by the shape of the white arc that goes across the image and looks (to me) like a lacy rainbow. The musical chord is produced by the arrangement of the colors themselves.

Yellow & Pink Chord

When I look at this image, I hear harmony. The chord is produced by the yellow with the pink but without the extra red over on the left, it wouldn't turn into sound. The contrast is important for some reason. I hear the same sound everytime I look at it today.

Singing Arches

In "The Singing Arches," the pink against the yellow produces the pastel sound I hear while the complex of shadows under the eaves of the arches provides the echoes. Also, the arches look like singing mouths, especially when the loping water opens and shuts them in the steady rhythm of song.

Vibrato Bridge

The colors I heard when I took "Vibrato Bridge" are not specific to a particular instrument though the sound is definitely in the lower range or register that is typical of brown. What is specific about the image, however, is the shape of the sound which is a vibrato produced by the shape of the bridge. When I look at the image now, I experience an additional texture response. If I'm allowed to say this on a webpage, I feel myself draped in brown silk lingerie trimmed in black lace. For more details about this image, visit my blog entry for 11-3-05.
